O‘AHU: PARKING GARAGE CLEARANCE HEIGHTS

Trying to get to the list quickly? Scroll down!

I WAS STOKED OUT OF MY MIND WHEN I FINALLY BOUGHT MY 4RUNNER LAST YEAR, BUT THEN REALITY SET IN…

when I realized that I couldn’t just park wherever the heck I wanted. #BigCarProbs for real. One night, when my colleagues and I were going out to a department dinner, everyone parked in the Chinatown parking garage, which cost $3 for the entire time we were there. Something like 4 hours. I, on the other hand, parked in the open lot at the corner of Nu‘uanu & Ala Moana Blvd. because I didn’t want to chance scraping my rails… The cost? $12.

So, imagine my frustration when I realized that every time I might have to park in a parking garage, I would have to go crazy out of my way to find out what the parking clearance is. I’m talking calling-the-management-office out of my way. *insert iPhone’s rolling eye emoji here*

The other day, when my boyfriend and I were going to dinner at Doraku in Waikīkī, we were sweating bricks trying to figure out where to park if we couldn’t park in the Royal Hawaiian Center garage. On the way there, I mentioned to him how cool it would be if someone would just create a website that listed the parking clearances on all of the garages. He agreed. Now I’m thinking, WHY NOT ME? Duh.

So… here goes nothing. But before I spout my list off, here’s an FYI for you (in case you’re not sure what your clearance is). I have a 2016 Toyota 4Runner with A/T tires and no lift. My clearance is technically 5′ 11″, but I prefer to enter garages with more clearance than that! Additionally, Toyota Tacomas (no lift) have a clearance of 5′ 10″ (or it could be 5′ 9″).

KAIMUKI PARKING GARAGES

  • Times Supermarket • 6′ 3″

KAKA‘AKO PARKING GARAGES

  • Ward Centre • 6′ 0″
BUT, the further up you go, the lower the clearance gets. I got to about the 3rd floor when there was approximately .5″ between my rails and the ceiling.
  • Ward Entertainment Center, 1st Floor • 7′ 0″
  • Ward Warehouse • 5′ 11″

WAIKĪKĪ PARKING GARAGES

  • Royal Hawaiian Center • 6′ 3″
